Mikhail Gorbachev made a pilgrimage to the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi.  The man who once stated "Nature is my God." has revealed his deep faith as a Christian.   The last leader of the Evil Empire (Yes, it really was evil) has shown that even a repressive regime cannot completely stifle religious belief.

Our Founding Fathers established the First Amendment as primacy because they realized that an enumeration of religious freedom would leave no doubt that there are few choices more important or more personal than that of spiritual or denominational selection.  That no man should be dictated as to how or where or whom he worships.

We take this freedom for granted; we should.  Because as the revolutionary generation expounded, our rights are granted by God and endowed to all men.  I am thankful however that Gorbechev feels the time is right to "come out of the closet" as to his Christian faith.
